Second-half goals from Chris Porter and Sammie Szmodics secured Colchester United their first league away win of the season at old foes Wycombe Wanderers this afternoon.

The U's struck twice in the final quarter of the match at Adams Park to claim all three points, in the League Two clash.

It was an even first half, with both sides looking threatening at times without really getting a foothold on the game.

Former Colchester midfielder Marcus Bean curled over from the edge of the area for Wycombe in the ninth minute after Adebayo Akinfenwa had laid the ball off to him.

And less than a minute later at the other end, Szmodics scuffed his attempt at the near post from Brennan Dickenson’s low cross and Sido Jombati cleared at the second bite of the cherry.

The Chairboys stepped up their challenge after that, with Tom Eastman’s vital interception in the six-yard box preventing Dayle Southwell from converting from close range and Aaron Pierre’s free header from Danny Rowe’s fine cross sailed wide when he should have hit the target.

Wycombe keeper Jamal Blackman denied Brennan Dickenson seconds after Drey Wright’s half volley had gone close from close range, as the sides went in level at the break.

The start of the second half was relatively uneventful, with both sides battling to get a stranglehold on the contest.

But Colchester made the crucial breakthrough just after the hour through Porter, who stabbed home after linking up well with Szmodics in the area following Eastman's long pass.

Soon after, the impressive Eastman's vital header diverted Bean's effort over for a corner after Adebayo Akinfenwa had done well in the area.

However, Colchester almost doubled their lead in the 79th minute when Dickenson's direct run and fierce shot forced Blackman to make a good save at his near post.

And it was 2-0 with eight minutes remaining when Szmodics' struck a superb volley into the top corner from the edge of the area, from Porter's assist.

There was little way back for Wycombe after that although U's keeper Sam Walker made a magnificent save to turn substitute Paul Hayes' effort onto the bar late on, as Colchester wrapped up an impressive away win.
