COLCHESTER United could take another look at Middlesbrough defender Mark Kitching after he featured for their under-23 side.

The 20-year-old is currently finding his opportunities limited at the Premier League club and played for the U’s in their Professional Development League Two stalemate with Sheffield United, earlier this week.

Kitching, who spent time on loan at National League side York City last season, is yet to play a competitive game for Middlesbrough, having emerged from their academy.

And having been drafted in by director of football Tony Humes, the youngster could get the chance to further impress at Colchester, as he looks for competitive game time.

U’s under-23 boss Wayne Brown said: “He’s 20 years old and he’s found it difficult to get opportunities at Middlesbrough.

“We’ve had the opportunity to have a look at him on Monday and we’ll take it from there.

“He did fine against Sheffield United and we’ll play it by ear on what happens next.”

Brown has praised the impact that midfielder Owen Garvan has had with his Colchester under-23 squad, as he recovers from injury.

The former Crystal Palace player has played in the U’s opening two development league games as he comes back from an injury sustained in pre-season, featuring in their draws against Sheffield United and Hull City.

Brown said: “Owen’s fine – his attitude is first class.

“He’s infectious and great to have around the younger lads.

“He’s trying to get match time under his belt and hopefully he’s done that.”

Brown is satisfied with Colchester’s performances in their opening two under-23 games of the season.

The likes of Garvan, Alex Wynter and Macauley Bonne all featured in the U’s 0-0 draw with the Blades.

Brown added: “It was OK against Sheffield United – it was a bit frustrating if I’m honest.

“We didn’t put our chances away at the times when they came along and deal with teams who play the long ball.

“But overall, it was pleasing that we didn’t lose the game and that we kept a clean sheet.

“If you look at our first two league games, Hull City won the league last year and Sheffield United were runners-up, last year.

“If you look at the results on paper, they’re not bad and being hard to beat is a great mentality to have for any team.”
