SHELLEY Persent was a clear winner at Colchester Golf Club’s ladies Autumn Meeting.

Persent, who recently won the ladies' knockout competition and reached the final of the club knockout, showed her all-round class with victory in the main event.

On a perfect day for golf and with the course looking its autumn best, it was only the putting which made life difficult for the ladies who took part.

By the time Persent had reached the eighth hole, she was playing three over her 18 handicap.

But three pars, with a birdie on the tenth, on the next four holes put her back on track.

Steady golf from then on – tarnished only by a double bogey on the 18th – saw her back in the clubhouse with the winning card.

Patricia Walker (26) and Fiona Rose (28) both carded 35 while Philippa Davies (36) returned 34 points to finish fourth.

Catherine Chick and Janet Tebbutt both scored 33.

Nearest the pins were won by Nikki Bryant (eighth) and Persent (16th).

The afternoon three ball stableford was won on the front holes by Wendy Smith and Gill Crayston.

The team of Bridget Whitworth, Sheena Nunny and Katie Cooper were runners-up.

On the back, Persent, Rose and Liz Harrison beat Claire Croger, Janet Austin and Jan Murray into second place.

Colchester GC hold a medal competition, incorporating the Medal Winners Cup.

Iain Cruickshank (9), who qualified by winning last month’s VJ Cup, returned an impressive 65 nett to beat Mike Withers (nine) by three shots.

With just one double bogey cancelled out by two birdies, padded out with 11 pars and four-evenly spread bogeys, it was a balanced and impressive round.

Matt Black (9) was third, with his 69 nett.

Stuart Bark took the field apart in the Medal competition with a nett 63, from his 18 handicap.

He scythed through the field and reduced his handicap by three shots.

David Latta (14) was runner-up with nett 67 ahead of third-placed Mike Morley (ten), who scored nett 69.

Lewis Barber (5) won Colchester GC’s Mid-week Medal after returning 37 points, two points ahead of runner-up Brian Clarke (10).
