MERSEA Island’s upcoming music marathon has been extended by an hour after “so many musicians and singers applied”.

Mersea Island’s Music Marathon (MIMM) is returning after six years and will now last more than 27 hours due to too many singers and musicians registering an interest.

All participants are required to seek sponsorship, with half going towards new equipment for the Mersea Island Community Association, including a sound system expected to cost £21,000, and half going to a charity of their choice.

Centre manager Tim Gannon said: “Come and enjoy more than 27 hours of live music in a non-stop extravaganza showcasing more than 50 acts, from a swing band to choirs, soloists, church groups and schools.

“Behind the scenes a whole host of volunteers will help run the event as well as manning the MICA café which will be open throughout.”

The MICA centre has been the “beating heart of the island” since 1981 - hosting everything from pantomimes to kickboxing and also has a public bar of its own.

Admission to MIMM is free with donations give to acts you enjoy listening to.

The marathon will take place from Friday, May 17 at 7.40pm until Saturday, May 18 at 11pm.
